COLONIA
DIGNIDAD ARRESTS ORDERED
(Oct. 5, 2005) Judge Jorge
Zepeda last weekend ordered the arrest of former top leaders at
Colonia Dignidad, most of whom are already in jail, while at the
same time seeking the extradition of absentee leader Albert
Schreiber, whose last known address is in Germany.
Paul
Schäfer, Harmut Hopp, Kurt Schnellenkamp and Karl van den Berg were
charged with the illegal procurement and sale of weapons or for
concealing weapons from government authorities.
The weapons
arsenals were found last June and August at the German colony, after
years of investigation by Chilean authorities into suspected human
rights abuses that occurred at the colony during the 17-year
military regime of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. The colony is believed to
have manufactured and exported armaments without proper permission
from state authorities.
Colonia Dignidad founder Paul Schäfer
is currently under custody, accused of serial child molestation,
after going on the lam from Chilean justices and finally being
arrested in Argentina last March and forcefully returned to Chile
(ST, March 11).
Judge Zepeda’s indictments suggest that his
investigation is advancing after initially sparring with the State
Defense Council and a local judge concerning matters of
jurisdiction.
